Eat this, Brownie
Rome's Mayor Brown (as opposed to the one in Buffalo) was recently spanked by the Common Council over his proposed budget. Amazingly, a 2% tax increase has been turned into a 0.5% tax cut. The Daily Sentinel reacted, predictably, by claiming public safety too a hit. The "hit" consisted of making the police use their guns another year, not buying a police dog and not purchasing a $36,000 SUV. The SUV made up more than 1/3 of the cuts in that area. The Common Council could do little about increased staffing, but was able to pare down equipment purchases for the city.
James Brown took this as a personal assault. He plans to sway one of the Councilors to pass the bugdet when he vetoes the changes. The battle's not over yet kids. Remember a few years ago when the school budget was defeated, resubmitted, and passed virtually unchanged? If the takes hikes eventually pass, it means one thing for sure.
It's Brown's city, we just live in it.

In this area, being a Republican is often just an on-ramp to office, regardless of what you actually believe in. Lee is raising property taxes, apparently. Surpluses are okay, raising taxes to do it is idiotic.

It's tough to use national politics to decide on the local Common Council. I'll try to post some opinions after the budget is passed.

I notice they also stopped talking about that $36,000 SUV they wanted.
