Eat this, Brownie

Rome's Mayor Brown (as opposed to the one in Buffalo) was recently spanked by the Common Council over his proposed budget. Amazingly, a 2% tax increase has been turned into a 0.5% tax cut. The Daily Sentinel reacted, predictably, by claiming public safety too a hit. The "hit" consisted of making the police use their guns another year, not buying a police dog and not purchasing a $36,000 SUV. The SUV made up more than 1/3 of the cuts in that area. The Common Council could do little about increased staffing, but was able to pare down equipment purchases for the city.

James Brown took this as a personal assault. He plans to sway one of the Councilors to pass the bugdet when he vetoes the changes. The battle's not over yet kids. Remember a few years ago when the school budget was defeated, resubmitted, and passed virtually unchanged? If the takes hikes eventually pass, it means one thing for sure.

It's Brown's city, we just live in it.

I was excited when Brown was elected. Being a successful businessman, I naturally thought he would be fiscally conservative. But I am with the Common Council on this one, big time. Brown follows Griffo, who raised city worker benefits and salary through the roof, privitized garbage collection, etc. What a nightmare. And Lee still has no town tax. What happened to all of the REAL fiscal conservatives?

In this area, being a Republican is often just an on-ramp to office, regardless of what you actually believe in. Lee is raising property taxes, apparently. Surpluses are okay, raising taxes to do it is idiotic.

It's tough to use national politics to decide on the local Common Council. I'll try to post some opinions after the budget is passed.

BTW, I love how the paper describes "public safety" taking a hit. Please! The Rome PD has more gizmos, gadgets and toys to make most other PD's jealous. Night vision? New guns? When is the last time the RPD discharged their weapons? The RPD is nothing but pork for spending, just like the school district. Vote against outrageous school budget hikes and you are "against the children". Vote against more funding for the pork RPD and you are against public safety.

The RPD last night took pot shots at the Rome common councilors for now approving their funding to buy new guns and other materials. First off the City's purchased new computer a few years ago there is nothing wrong with the computers they have just they don't know how to use them nor do they have anyone with the knowledge base in computers to set them up properly.
If their guns were faulty then why didn't the officers complain to their chief to have the problem corrected before the budget hearing. Not one complaint was brought to the attention of the councilors. Guess the problem wasn't serious enough to brother or their commanders did not feel it nessessary to bring this matter to anyone attention. As for the budget the RPD is blaming the wrong people for the budget. Why does the city feel it is nessessary to hire a full time person to see what garbage the residents are putting out on the curb. Why hire a private investigator to follow city employees around to see if they are abusing their sick time or workers comp. Who do you think the private dick is going to be following. The RPD you idiots. For an agency that is suppose to be on the cutting edge of police work you fail to see you are shooting yourself in the foot by going along with Brown's budget to start with. Please tell me one person in city government thats deserves a 10,000 dollar raise? Wakw up RPD you been had...
