Does Rob Astorino Have a Chance in Hell?

Andrew Cuomo's dog and pony show of an ethics commission has been exposed. For months, the group was given investigative powers, but had various people reporting back to Cuomo. His office tried to stop investigations and eventually disbanded the commission when it got to close to his pals. Cuomo apparently tried to claim that he had the sole authority to shut them down, even though it looked very much like they were finding ethics violations in Cuomo's own office.

Now there is the potential that Rob Astorino, the most vocal Republican running, has a real case against Cuomo. The Republicans have not fared well statewide since Pataki ended his term. Even the Republican legislature brought us gay marriage and the SAFE Act, which could potentially bite them on the ass in November. We'l have to see if there's some life yet in the NY GOP.

I don't think he does. If you read the comments on the NYT Moreland Commission exposé, the vibe is that in-spite-of Cuomo's nastiness, the public would never go for a Republican . . . period.

The Republicans have a serious problem with their reputation -- perhaps deservedly so -- that needs to be fixed before they can start winning. Eg. Republicans were in charge following 9-11, but never did anything to fix the Southern border, one of our greatest security risks -- but one that also resulted in many Americans losing their jobs to foreigners. Republicans participated in or cheerleaded trade agreements that sent more of our manufacturing capacity overseas -- another security risk and another loss of jobs for average Americans.

Why should Americans vote for a party that has hurt them in the pocketbook?

As you point out, the Republicans have participated with Democrats in some of the most bothersome things. They offer no choice from the Democrats -- but at least the Democrats tell you where they want to take you. So they appear the more honest of the two parties.

Don't confuse their blatant evil with honesty. They just know who they need to fool some of the time and it's not the independent voter.
